Keep carbohydrates to 50 percent of your daily caloric intake and eat foods with plenty of fiber. Limit alcohol intake to no more than one drink a day for pregnant women, and choose only one drink, Dorff says. Women should also pay attention to what they eat to ensure that their body is getting the nutrients it needs. "Make sure you're eating enough protein, and if you're not getting enough protein, that's when you can start thinking of taking an over-the-counter supplement," Dorff says. 2. Work Out Women can increase their physical activity during pregnancy, but they should begin slowly and progress over time, says Dr. Dorff. "A lot of times women don't understand the different types of exercises that are safe during pregnancy, and it's really a matter of listening to your body and seeing what you can tolerate. The best thing to do is start slowly," she says. To get started, it helps to know your BMI, or body mass index.
